St. Helena Bay is situated 150km north of Cape Town on the West Coast and stretches approximately 18km along the coast from Laingville to Duiker Eiland. It is the only bay on the West Coast of Africa where the sun and the moon rise over the sea.

The seafarer, Vasco da Gama, entered at Viool Bay near Stompneus Bay on the 8th
November 1497, and was responsible for naming the town St. Helena Bay. Over the years St. Helena Bay has transformed into a popular town with residents from all over the world.

Die Kaia and Juds Coffee shop and Nursery is situated on Brandhuis land, at the entrance of the town. The property was bought in 1956 from the Ehlers family and extends 8.3 Morgen. The contract stipulated that the house must be preserved, and a total of 3 cattle and 3 live poultry may be kept.

In the early years fresh water had to be transported from wells, either by land or by sea. One such well is still to this day situated at Brandhuis and another at Slippers Bay.

St. Helena Bay Coffee Shop and Nursery was built in 2008. This popular Coffee Shop offers tourist and locals a welcoming and homely atmosphere.

With views that stretch across the Bay, visitors may be treated to sights of whales, dolphins and many bird species which this area is well known for.

THE STORY OF THE SIEGFRIED FAMILY: A LEGACY IN ST. HELENA BAY

Amidst the tumultuous waves and cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the story of the Siegfried family finds its origin in the heart of St. Helena Bay. It’s a tale of deep-rooted love for the West Coast and the fertile land upon which a legacy began to grow.

Heinrich Eduard Siegfried, known as Oupa Eddie, was a master butcher from Germany. His expertise led him to St. Helena Bay, where he began building a life of craftsmanship and dedication. In 1946, he married Ida Sieber, a shining jewel from the Sieber family. Together, they laid the foundation for a strong family name in the town, starting with the establishment of the St. Helena Butchery.

With the birth of their first son, Heinrich Peter Siegfried, in 1947, a new chapter began for the family. In the early 1960s, the Siegfrieds and the Sieber family acquired a piece of land, called Brandhuis. This land was not just an investment, it was a promise for the future, a place where generations’ dreams would sprout and grow.

On this land stood a small clay house, named as ‘die Kaia’ by Oupa Eddie. It was a beloved holiday destination for the Siegfrieds, a place where memories could be made and traditions cherished over decades.

Years later the vision of the future was carried on by Peter and his beloved wife, Judy. While Peter pursued a career in geology, they later started a new life on the Brandhuis land. In 2007, Peter, Judy, and their two sons, Barney and Heinie, embarked on another venture on the Brandhuis land, named St. Helena Coffee Shop and Nursery, now better known as Juds. It was a further extension of their legacy, a place where people came together to share their love for the West Coast and its unique flavours.

Today, the Brandhuis land stands as a symbol of the Siegfried family’s legacy. It is a place of memories and hope, where each sunset tells a story of the dreams of the past and the promises of the future.
